Choosing Flexibility: A Reflection for International Virtual Assistant Day

Last week marked International Virtual Assistant Day – a moment to celebrate the work VAs do behind the scenes, the businesses we support and the choices we’ve made to work differently.

For me, it was also a chance to pause and reflect on why I started willowby in the first place.

After years in a traditional corporate role, I reached a point where something needed to shift. The 9-to-5 structure no longer served me – not just practically, but personally. I was craving more breathing space in my week, more alignment between my work and my values and most importantly, more flexibility to be present where it truly counts.

That shift wasn’t only about my own wellbeing (though that was a big part of it). It was also about my family – specifically, my parents. As they’ve grown older and needed a little more support, I found myself wanting to show up in ways that weren’t always possible within the boundaries of corporate life. Whether it’s a medical appointment, a grocery run or just being nearby for the unexpected – those everyday moments matter.

Starting willowby allowed me to honour both sides of my life. I get to support clients I admire, do work that challenges and inspires me and still be present for my family in the ways that matter most.

This is the kind of business I always hoped to build – one that’s grounded in trust, integrity and humanity. And I’m so grateful to my clients who value those things too.

So, as we recognise International VA Day, I’m celebrating more than just the profession – I’m celebrating the freedom to shape a career around what truly matters, for me!
